Germany's Ending- I Overheard a Secret

  “Ahhh, done”, you sighed, thankfully setting your pencil down. You were finally done with your homework, all of it. It had taken a long time, but you felt a lot better about having it complete. Now, you could do whatever you wanted.

  You stood up and stretched, your muscles happy to be moving out of the position you had been in for the past hour or two. You had a lot of pent up energy and you felt like going out for a walk or even a jog if you really need to. You wrote a quick note for your parents and stuck somewhere you were sure they would see it. With that done, you put on your best walking shoes and headed out.

-Timeskip of the Year-

  After a while of walking, you had reached the town. It was still early so quite a few people were out; shopping, eating, playing, etc. It was really nice and you decided to stay there. You liked watching people and NO, not in a weird way. You just felt peaceful seeing others go through their day and wonder about where they would go next. Take, for example, the lady that was coming out of the shop across the street. She was holding a brightly colored bag with a pretty bow on it. She must be heading to someone’s birthday party. And there was an old man buying some pretty roses from a small flower stand. Maybe he was giving those to his wife in honor of their 50 year anniversary.

  You smiled and looked next to you. A bunch of people were coming out of the rather large building, all sweaty and wearing workout clothes. Looking up, you saw the sign for a gym. You wondered about going inside and actually started walking to the entrance when two people you recognized came out. It was Ludwig and his brother, Gilbert! You walked a little faster, planning on saying hello, when you overheard Gilbert say something to Ludwig.

  “Come on Luddy; you’re in love with the frau!”

  You quickly changed directions and walked into the little gap between the gym and the building next to it. Ludwig…was in love with someone? Who? Someone you knew? Your heart was racing, but you didn’t know why…okay, you knew why. You had been a little wary about admitting it to yourself, but you had to come to terms with the fact that you did love Ludwig. You’d been aware of it for a while now and even thought about confessing to him, but apparently, he already had someone special.

  You leaned against the wall; your pervious energy feeling completely drained. You should have known this would happen. After all, you had only known Ludwig for a few days. Ludwig probably had had his eye on this other girl for years. You felt a little guilty, but you started listening in on the German brothers’ conversation.

  “Admit it, bruder! The awesome me knows you way too well!”

  “Gil, I svear…”

  “Just say it!”

  “Okay, I like her. Are you happy now?”

  “Very! Kesesese! I know when my little bruder is hiding something!”

  “Vill you shut up about it now?”

  “Nope! Kesesese! I’m going to help you win the frau’s heart! We’ll have to set up something really romantic-”

  “That von’t be necessary! I vill tell (f/n) that I love her my own vay”.

  “Aw, but you need my awesome help. You can be really clueless about these things”.

  “And you’re an expert?”

  “Ja! I’m awesome when it comes to romance…well, it comes to anything”.

  You backed up the dialogue a bit in your mind. Ludwig loved….you?! You smirked a tiny bit; you were so relieved and happy. You stepped back out onto the sidewalk and looked over at them. Ludwig had his back to you, but you could see Gilbert with his cocky grin clearly. His red eyes flicked over to you and widened a bit before he burst out laughing.

  “Vhat the hell are you laughing about now?” Ludwig grumbled, still unaware of your presence as you came up behind him. Gilbert pointed at you and Ludwig looked behind and locked gazes with you.

  “Hi”, you said simply, waving and smiling.

  Ludwig’s face turned pinkish-red in embarrassment. “(f/n), you…probably heard all of that, didn’t you?”

  “Every word”, you chuckled.

  Ludwig seemed to gather himself, but his blush stayed as he said, “Vell, it’s true. Ich liebe dich, (f/n)”.

  “I’m guessing that means ‘I love you’. If that’s the case, ich liebe dich Ludwig”, you answered.

  Ludwig smiled lightly and his piercing ice blue eyes softened. They hardened again in irritation though a few seconds later.

  “Kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss, kiss! Küss sie bereits bruder!”

  “Gilbert! Srup und gehen weg!”,Ludwig hissed. He turned threateningly, but his older brother was already scampering a safe distance away.

  “We can kiss if you want to”, you pointed out.

  Ludwig turned back to you with a bashful smile and after a second, leaned down and kiss you on the lips, gentle but sincere and loving. Your heart soared and even though the kiss was only for a few seconds, it felt like a lifetime. Instead of kissing again or going to dinner like most couples do, the both of you ended up chasing Gilbert down since he recorded the kiss on his cell phone.
